Mr Shafafy is a senior consultant in spinal surgery with many years of experience treating spinal conditions and pathologies ranging from simple sciatica, back and neck pain to complex paediatric and adult spinal deformities.
Mr Shafafy qualified from St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical college, London in 1994 and finished his advanced surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics at the Royal London Hospital. He later received sub-specialist training in spinal surgery and reconstructive complex spinal deformity surgery in Oxford and at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.
Mr Shafafy has been working as a consultant in spinal surgery for over a decade and is currently working on the NHS at Nottingham University Hospitals. He has established himself as one of the most prominent spinal deformity surgeons at the Centre for Spinal Study and Surgery, Nottingham. This Centre has national and international reputation in pioneering treatment for most challenging and complex spinal deformities and conditions. Mr Shafafy also holds private clinics in Nottingham and London as well as doing educational and charity clinics and operations around the world.
Mr Shafafy is highly involved in training and medical education. Up to recently he was the Nottingham Spinal Fellowship program director which has trained generations of spinal surgeons. Mr Shafafy has been a trainer, faculty member, course organiser and chair for numerous national and international courses , meetings and conferences. He has published numerous articles on spinal pathologies and conditions and continues to be involved in research in this field.
Mr Shafafy is currently the lead for clinical governance and patient safety in his department. He is an elected executive member of the British scoliosis Society (BSS). He has also served as a member for various committees for Scoliosis Research Society and North American Society of Spine.
