I am currently the Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department at B P Poddar Hospital and Medical Research, Kolkata. We mostly do adult cardiac surgery averaging about 25 per month. Strict enforcement of SOPs and vigilant patient care has helped us achieve an impressive average mortality of less than 0.8%.
At my previous appointment, I used to work as Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, at Medica Superspeciality Hospital, Kolkata. Our department has a monthly caseload of about 100 Hearts. I routinely do OPCABs along with a fairly good number of Ischaemic Mistrals. I also do Hemi sternotomy AVR and Mini Mitral along with some single/bi leaflet Mitral repairs. My other surgical endeavor included LV volume restoration and surgery of the Aortic Root.
I worked as Fellow, Cardiothoracic at The Royal Perth Hospital (RPH). RPH is the tertiary referral center for Cardiothoracic surgery in the state of Western Australia and the only hospital in the state for Advanced Life support and Heart-Lung Transplantation. RPH is also the referral hospital for Trans Aortic Valve Replacements. Here, at RPH I had the opportunity to train myself in the enlisting, insertion and management of patients with LVAD (Heartware and Heartmate II). I also gained experience in Heart-Lung Transplantation.
Among the other routine surgeries I acquired skills in Mitral Valve Repairs and Aortic Surgery including Root and Arch replacements. I also had a chance to brush up my skills in Thoracic surgery including lobectomies, decortication, and VATS.
After Completion of my higher surgical training, MCh(CVTS) I joined Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS), Kolkata as Junior Consultant, Cardiac Surgery. RTIICS is specialized center for cardiac care with an annual surgical volume of about 2500 hearts including both adult and pediatric cases. Here I had supervised surgical training in advanced adult cardiac surgery along with opportunity to do cases independently. I was working there till I joined as Fellow, Cardiothoracic Surgery at Royal Perth Hospital in August 2012.
At RTIICS, I was mainly involved in adult cardiac surgery and usually performed 1-2 cardiac surgeries everyday independently. These included coronary artery bypass grafting (both on pump and off pump), valves and combined procedures.
RTIICS is an accredited training institute for cardiac surgery by National Board of Examinations, New Delhi, India. I was involved with supervision and training of new trainees.
