Dr Claramae Chia is the Head and Senior Consultant in the Department of Sarcoma, Peritoneal and Rare Tumours (SPRinT) in the Division of Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore. She graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2005. In 2008, she obtained her membership diploma for surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Furthermore, she completed her advanced surgical training in May 2013 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She then went on to complete her subspecialty training in surgical oncology, focusing on peritoneal surface malignancies. She was awarded the SingHealth Health Manpower Development Plan - Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Surgical Oncology Programme in 2013. This program allowed her to train at the Centre Hospitalier Lyon Sud in Lyon, France, with Professor Olivier Glehen.
In recognition of the advanced oncological work that the team had been performing, the SPRinT department was established in 2019 under Dr. Chia's leadership. Dr. Chia and the SPRinT department continue to push clinical boundaries by introducing new services and initiatives, such as the introduction of Pressurised Intraperitoneal Aerolised Chemotherapy (PIPAC) and a focus on palliative surgical care.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Chia has also been actively involved in clinical and basic science research since her basic surgical training. She has published in various peer-reviewed journals and won the Singapore Millennium Foundation Grant for Associate Investigator in 2008 for her translational work in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. At Sprint, Dr. Chia maintains an active role in research focusing on peritoneal surface malignancies, retroperitoneal sarcoma, and advanced/pelvic malignancies. She has over 70 published manuscripts to her name. Additionally, the department conducts several clinical trials in peritoneal surface malignancies.
Dr. Chia is committed to teaching the next generation of surgeons and doctors. She contributes to the General Surgical Residency Program and actively teaches medical students from all three local medical schools. Notably, she is the first and only mentor in an Asian institute under the European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO).
